Forrest Gump (1994)
The movie is a beautiful story of a simple man Forrest, Forrest Gump, with sub normal IQ but very good intentions. He has been accidentally in many historical events. The story is of a man who never understood complexity of life and lived a simple life and loved to do what his loved ones said. The storyline is based on a fiction of the same name by Winston Groom in 1986.
Art:
The movie starts with a feather falling to the foot of Tom Hanks sitting on a bus-stand bench where he starts narrating his story. The feather wonderfully symbolizes the gentle and smooth nature of Forrest. There has been many discussions on the symbolism of feather. Forrest never controlled his own life and let it flow the way just as the feather in the free air. The movie ends also in a bus-stand with again the feather freely floating on air.
In Forrest’s lines, there beautifully hid the bitterness of life with Forrest’s simple understanding. Like when he visits Jenny in a strip club, he simply says her dream came true as she was a folk singer now. Also the time when young Forrest visits young Jenny , he says her father was very loving, always kissing and touching her and her sisters.
Science:
The movie has excellent visual effects with many historical footage amalgam with the story. Using CGI techniques and blue screen shots, Tom Hanks was shown shaking hands with historical figures. In the later half of the movie, Lt. Dan’s legs (when he was crippled in war) were removed using chroma key technique and rotoscope.
The scene where Forrest and Jenny meets in a peace rally in Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC, an effect of several thousands of crowd was created with multiple shots with people rearranged in different quadrant in each successive shots.
The Movie is wonderfully directed, and wonderful acting by Tom Hanks makes it more amazing. The movie won many awards and nominations in Academy, Golden Globe, BAFTA, People’s Choice, etc. Tom Hanks won Academy award for most Acting.
